Specialist Area Guidelines

The Institute uses the Specialist Area Guidelines to:

  • evaluate and approve the proposed prerequisites for entry to teaching method units in secondary graduate-entry (postgraduate) initial teacher education programs
  • evaluate and approve the discipline studies offerings and teaching method units in undergraduate initial teacher education programs
  • evaluate and endorse teacher education programs for already qualified teachers who wish to gain additional teaching qualifications
  • advise those enquiring about entry to initial teacher education programs.

Assessing your own qualifications

Applicants for secondary graduate-entry (postgraduate) initial teacher education programs should apply through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC). The VTAC application form requires you to list either two single teaching methods, or one double teaching method. Teaching methods are the specialist subject areas that you will be able to teach in secondary schools once you have graduated.

The Guide to assessing secondary teaching areas (PDF - 61 KB) assists you to assess your academic transcripts and determine which teaching methods to nominate on the VTAC application form.
