1. approved initial teacher education programs that offer undergraduate pathways for graduates to become Special Education teachers

2. teacher education programs endorsed by the Institute for already qualified teachers to upgrade their qualifications and become Special Education teachers. 

1. Initial teacher education programs - Special Education

The following programs are approved initial teacher education programs that prepare graduates to become Special Education teachers.

LA TROBE UNIVERSITY (Bendigo campus)

  • Bachelor of Education - 4-year undergraduate program approved for primary teaching in Victoria. This program has an optional pathway approved for teaching Special Education.
  • Bachelor of Early Childhood Education - 4-year undergraduate program approved for primary teaching in Victoria. This program has an optional pathway approved for teaching Special Education.

 MONASH UNIVERSITY (Berwick campus)

  • Bachelor of Education (Special Education) - 4-year program approved for preparing graduates as primary, secondary and special education teachers

  • Bachelor of Education/Bachelor of Applied Science (Disability) - 4-year undergraduate program approved for primary teaching and special education teaching in Victoria

2. Endorsed teachers education programs - Special Education

The following programs are endorsed by the Institute for qualified teachers who wish to gain further qualifications in Special Education. The one year full-time or part-time equivalent programs listed are also suitable for three-year qualified teachers wishing to upgrade their qualifications to four-year qualified status.

AUTISM TEACHING INSTITUTE (Flemington)

  • Vocational Graduate Diploma in Teaching Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder - a one year full-time or part-time equivalent program endorsed for qualified teachers to also become qualified special education teachers

AUSTRALIAN CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY

  • Master of Education (Autism Spectrum Studies) - a one year full-time or part-time equivalent program for qualified teachers to also become special education teachers. The initial units of this program are offered at Eastern Ranges School.

DEAKIN UNIVERSITY (distance education)

  • Master of Education (Special Educational Needs) - a one year full-time or part-time equivalent program for qualified teachers to also become special education teachers

Deakin University School of Education website

FEDERATION UNIVERSITY AUSTRALIA (formerly UNIVERSITY OF BALLARAT) (Ballarat campus)

  • Master of Special Education – a two year full-time or part-time equivalent program for qualified teachers to also become qualified special Education teachers. Four-year qualified teachers with appropriate experience may be eligible for up to one year credit into the program.

  • Master of Special Education (by coursework) - a one year full-time or part-time equivalent program for qualified teachers to also become qualified special education teachers

  • Master in Inclusive and Special Education – a two year full time equivalent program for qualified teachers to also become qualified Special Education teachers. This endorsement is conditional on graduates completing all three specialised professional learning units and the two units EDF5692 Professional practice in special and inclusive education and EDF5699 Extended teaching practice.

THE UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE (Parkville campus)

  • Master of Learning Intervention - a one year full-time or part-time program endorsed for qualified teachers to also become qualified special education teachers. This program has pathways to enable specialisation in disability, specific learning difficulties and hearing impairment. Endorsement is conditional on graduates completing the two Learning Intervention Internship units (Stream A).

UNIVERSITY OF NEWCASTLE (distance education)

  • Master of Special Education (with specialisation in Hearing Impairment) - a one year full-time or part-time equivalent program delivered by the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children Renwick Centre, endorsed for qualified teachers to also become qualified special education teachers
  • Master of Special Education (with specialisation in Vision Impairment) - a one year full-time or part-time equivalent program delivered by the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children Renwick Centre, endorsed for qualified teachers to also become qualified special education teachers
