The Australian accreditation standards (PDF - 857 KB) are used by the Institute's Accreditation Committee to accredit initial teacher education programs for preparing teachers in Victoria. Higher education providers wishing to have initial teacher education programs accredited should contact the Institute's Accreditation Manager.
Specialist Area Guidelines 2012 (PDF - 72 KB) describes the minimum qualifications required for specialist subject teachers who have completed or are completing initial teacher education programs accredited under the Victorian standards.
Specialist Area Guidelines 2013 (PDF - 87 KB) describes the minimum qualifications required for specialist subject teachers who are completing initial teacher education programs accredited under the Australian standards.
The Institute uses the Specialist Area Guidelines to:
- evaluate and approve the proposed prerequisites for entry to teaching method units in secondary graduate-entry (postgraduate) initial teacher education programs
- evaluate and approve the discipline studies offerings and teaching method units in undergraduate initial teacher education programs
- evaluate and endorse teacher education programs for already qualified teachers who wish to gain additional teaching qualifications
- advise those enquiring about entry to initial teacher education programs.
Preparing Future Teachers describes the state-based accreditation standards and process previously used by the Institute's Accreditation Committee to accredit (approve) initial teacher education programs for preparing teachers in Victoria. These standards were used up until the end of 2012.
