Changes to registration process for PRTs with experience

From 1 October 2017, the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) will only recognise previous teaching experience when it is part of an application for immediate full registration. This change is consistent with national teacher registration policies.

Any provisionally registered teachers or early childhood teachers who have already provided VIT with evidence of prior teaching experience can still apply for (full) teacher registration or (full) early childhood teacher registration until 30 September 2018 provided that they:

  • have taught for at least 80 days in an Australian or New Zealand school or early childhood service; and
  • can provide a recommendation report, completed by a registered principal or early childhood educational leader, indicating that they meet the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at the Proficient Teacher level.

From 1 October 2018, the process to apply for (full) registration utilising previous teaching experience will no longer be available. All provisionally registered teachers will be required to demonstrate their teaching proficiency by completing an inquiry into their practice and documenting evidence of their practice against the Proficient Teacher standard descriptors.
