Frequently asked questions about fees

1. What are the new fees for registered teachers?
The annual teacher registration fee for 2012 is $85, an increase from $74. The new fee for the five-yearly National Criminal History Record Check is $50. Even with these increases, these fees are low compared with other teacher registration boards or other professions.

2. How does the Victorian registration fee for teachers compare with the rest of Australia?

 Jurisdiction  Annual Fees
 New South Wales   $100
 Australian Capital Territory  $100
 South Australia  $100

 Tasmania  $86
 VICTORIA  $85
 Western Australia  $80
 Northern Territory  $75

 Queensland

 $70.50

3. How does the Victorian registration fee for teachers compare with other similar professions?

  • Psychologists $431
  • Licensed Plumbers $267
  • Podiatrists $184
  • Physiotherapists $199

But perhaps the profession which can most easily be compared with teachers is nurses. Their salaries are broadly comparable with teachers and the functions of the regulator are essentially the same. The annual registration fee for a nurse or midwife in Victoria is $160

4. Can the annual registration fee be waived?
From 1 October 2012, waivers of registration fees will be offered only in certain circumstances:

The annual registration fee may be waived if:

  • you are on an approved exchange program from interstate or overseas or who are teaching in Victoria as part of a formal inter-government agreement and who will be working as teachers in Victoria for a limited period,
  • or
  • you hold current accreditation in NSW and also intend on working in both NSW and Victoria.

For more information, refer to the policy .

5. My current waiver was granted until after 30 September 2012. Is it still valid?
If you have been approved a waiver prior to 30 September 2012 it will be honoured through to the approved end date.

6. I am not currently teaching in Victoria. What are my options?
1. Keep your registration current in case you return to teaching in Victoria by paying the annual registration fee and by meeting the requirements of your registration,
or
2. Advise the Institute that you wish to cancel your registration. If you choose this option and you later wish to return to teaching in Victorian schools, you would need to submit an Application for Registration to Teach form and the requested documentation to the Institute for assessment.

7. I currently hold non-practising registration: can I waive the fee?
To maintain non-practising registration you are required to pay the annual registration fee.

8. Why does the National Criminal History Record Check cost more than a Police Check?
In order for teachers to maintain their VIT registration, they are legally required to have a current National Criminal History Record Check (NCHRC) which has been conducted through the Institute. A current NCHRC is one that is not older than 5 years, in the year of a teacher’s registration. There is an administrative fee incurred by the Institute to manage this function.

Police checks obtained by individuals directly through Victoria Police or police departments in other Australian States or Territories do not capture the complete criminal history of an individual necessary for teacher registration. An NCHRC conducted through the Institute is exempt from the spent convictions scheme, which means all of a teacher’s criminal history will be revealed and it will search nationally for all types of sexual and indictable offences. This level of information is not revealed in other police checks.

9. How do I update my NCHRC?
If you have already set up your MyVIT account, log in with your password, click ‘My applications’ and complete the NCHRC form online. You will be sent an email soon after with a confirmation document attached. You will need to complete the document as instructed, print it, sign and mail it, along with your certified supporting documents, to the Victorian Institute of Teaching at the address provided.

10. What if I haven't set up my MyVIT account?
Click the ‘MyVIT’ tab. Click ‘I am currently registered with the VIT and I want to set up my MyVIT account’. You will receive an email from the Institute. Follow the instructions in the email to set up your MyVIT account.

11. What happens if I don’t pay my annual fee by the due date?

If you do not pay your annual fee by the due date the Institute will issue you a final notice. The amount payable on the final notice will incorporate and additional fee (late processing fee). If payment is not received by the due date on the final notice, the Institute will advise you in writing that your registration will be suspended if payment is not forthcoming by the stated date. It is an offence under the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 to undertake the duties of a teacher in a Victorian school for the duration of the suspension. Your employer will also be notified of the suspension of your registration.

A teacher whose registration is suspended may apply to have the suspension revoked by paying the outstanding fees and submitting a reasonable excuse in writing for the failure to pay the fees. Request for revocation will be considered on a weekly basis.

12. What happens if my registration is suspended?
If your registration is suspended, you will no longer be registered as a teacher in Victoria. Please note that it is an offence to teach without registration. You can apply to have the suspension revoked if you pay the outstanding fees and provide a satisfactory written explanation for your failure to pay by the due date.

13. Why haven't I received my registration card?
A card can only be issued once full payment has been received by the Institute, any renewal requirements have been met, and your NCHRC has been processed and cleared.
