The Minister approved the Qualification for Teacher Registration Policy 2012 in accordance with the Nationally Consistent approach to Teacher Registration on 16 July 2011. The policy took effect on 1 April 2012 and all applications received at the Institute from that date are assessed under the 2012 policy.

Under the new policy, the Institute’s English language requirements will increase in line with national standards. The main changes are:
The IELTS (Academic) requirements have been raised from an average band score of 7 to an average band score of 7.5 across all four skill areas of speaking, listening, reading and writing.
This means that there must be no score less than 7 in any of the four skill areas and there must be a score no less than 8 in the skill areas of speaking and listening, e.g.

There have been no changes to ISLPR and PEAT requirements.
From 1 April 2012, all English language tests will be valid for two years from the date of the test whenever that occurs.
All applicants who have undertaken their teacher education qualifications, consisting of four full years of higher education study that includes an approved initial teacher education program (or qualifications assessed as comparable) in English in Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, United States of America, Canada or the Republic of Ireland will not be required to undertake an English language test.
All other applicants will be required to undertake an English Language test.
