Support to renew your registration

Teachers who hold full registration have met standards of professional practice. To continue registration teachers have to maintain these standards. This means they have to renew their registration periodically.

By renewing their registration teachers are demonstrating to the community that they maintain currency in their professional knowledge and practice and continue to be a suitable person to teach. This process recognises and acknowledges the continuing professional learning of teachers in Victoria.

Requirements for renewal of registration

To renew registration teachers make declarations about their maintenance of professional practice and suitability to teach according to the criteria outlined in the following table.

Maintenance of professional practice  Continued suitability to be a teacher
  •  A defined quantum of days teaching, educational leadership or equivalent practice
  • A defined quantum of standards referenced professional development activities that update knowledge about pedagogy, content and/or practice
  • A current and satisfactory National Police History Check
  • Declarations about relevant charges or convictions of offences and disciplinary action in relation to professional conduct, competence or capacity as a teacher

For further information about the professional practice requirements, read:

Teachers will need a current and satisfactory National Police History Check (NPHC) to renew their registration.

If your NPHC is due a form will be available in your MyVIT portal.

If you haven't set up your MyVIT account, click the ‘MyVIT’ tab. Click ‘I am currently registered with the VIT and I want to set up my MyVIT account’. You will receive an email from the Institute. Follow the instructions in the email to set up your account.

Changes to the renewal of registration process

The review of the Victorian Institute of Teaching  determined that renewal of registration would become an annual process from1 January 2011.

Teachers currently in a renewal of registration period move to annual renewal after the expiry of their five-year renewal period. Teachers with a grant of full registration that occurred on or after 1 January 2011 are required to renew their registration annually.

Making an application to renew registration

Teachers who are due to renew their registration are sent an application form for this purpose. To complete the application, teachers are required to make declarations of their maintenance of professional practice and continued suitability to teach.

A set of notes (PDF - 72 KB) accompanies the application form to assist teachers with any questions they may have. Teachers do not have to provide evidence of their professional practice when they make their application for renewal of registration. However, they need to be able to provide evidence of their declarations  if requested by the Institute.

Teachers unable to renew their registration  will not have to let their registration expire. They may apply for non-practising registration.
