Warrnambool Primary School were big winners on the night. The school won the Outstanding Koorie Education Award with Changing the Tide @ Jamo, a program developed and led by Jacqui Gore. Jacqui also won the Outstanding Primary Teacher Award and the Lindsay Thompson Award for Excellence in Education.
Jacqui, a teacher in Warrnambool for 18 years and a native of the area, explained that Jamo was a popular term for the school, located on Jamieson Street. Jacqui was thrilled that the program received such recognition:
“When we started, we only had about 6 Koorie kids in the school and we weren’t doing enough to make better connections within the community. Now we have 44 out of 520 kids. We’re known in the community as culturally inclusive, and we encourage all cultures to be who they are.”
Jacqui feels that being born and bred in Warrnambool has helped her build trust, but she also acknowledges the supportive leadership in the school:
“We had the right people on board at the right time, and when you’ve got good leadership, you run with it.”
VIT congratulates all the winners. You can read more about the awards here.
