Supporting (fully) registered CRTs

Casual relief and emergency teachers (CRTs) undertake approximately 10-15% of a learner’s education. CRTs play an important role in Victoria’s education system and in learning outcomes. CRTs maintain the same registration requirements as all other (fully) registered teachers.

They must declare each year that they have:

As a leader in your workplace, you can play an important role in supporting CRTs to maintain registration requirements, and their professional growth and development, including improving learning outcomes in your education setting.

Here are some tips for supporting CRTs in your workplace:

  • offer regular work for CRTs to ensure they meet their required teaching days;
  • invite CRTs to attend professional development activities/meetings in your workplace;
  • allow regular CRTs access to online learner management systems so they have the necessary information required to more effectively support learners;
  • provide an internal e-mail address to regular CRTs; and
  • invite regular CRTs to attend parent-teacher interviews, Individual Learning Plan meetings, school/centre concerts and other events.

Supporting provisionally registered CRTs

Many of Victoria’s beginning teachers are working as CRTs; this can limit their opportunities to undertake an inquiry into their practice in order to move to (full) registration. The VIT (full) registration process gives assurance that all (fully) registered teachers are able to meet appropriate standards of practice. In order to move from provisional to (full) registration, a provisionally registered teacher (PRT) needs the support of a school or early childhood service.

If you are interested in supporting any of your regularly employed PRT CRTs, here are some tips for what your school or service can do:

  • offer an extended period of employment where possible;
  • connect the CRT with a VIT trained mentor or experienced colleague;
  • allow the CRT access to learner management systems such as Compass or Synergetic;
  • allow the CRT to accompany other teachers to parent teacher interviews;
  • invite the CRT to attend after school professional development; and
  • offer the CRT the ability to present to a workplace panel in your school or service.


The process of moving to (full) registration is the same for all teachers.
