Teachers are the number one in-school influence on student outcomes. By understanding the challenges and opportunities faced by Australian teachers, we can better support the profession and improve student outcomes. The Australian Teacher Workforce Data (ATWD) Initiative will help us achieve this.
The ATWD is a project jointly funded by all governments of Australia. It is being implemented by the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership.
What is the ATWD?
The Australian Teacher Workforce Data (ATWD) Initiative unites and connects initial teacher education (ITE) data, with teacher registration data from across Australia. It will provide a comprehensive picture of the teaching workforce nationally, across all systems and sectors, from entry into the profession to end of career.
The ATWD will deliver new insights into teacher education and the teaching workforce, and help inform national policy on how to better support the profession.
A better understanding of these and other teaching experiences will provide insights into national and local workforce challenges and opportunities, help identify long term workforce trends and allow more effective responses to issues affecting the workforce so that all systems and sectors can better support their teachers and strengthen the positive impact they have on student outcomes.
At the Victorian Institute of Teaching, we’re committed to quality teaching and ensuring our teachers are well prepared and supported throughout their careers. That’s why VIT is supporting the ATWD Initiative.
ATWD Teacher Survey
Victorian teachers are encouraged to add their voice through the ATWD Teacher Survey. It allows teachers to share aspects of their day-to-day experiences that will help understand important characteristics of the teacher workforce and reveal new insights into how the profession can be better supported.
Each registered teacher will receive an email with a unique link to access the survey from mid-November. Participation is voluntary, but extremely important as it will provide information to help the ATWD understand what teachers in Australia experience on a daily basis.
You will be able to provide valuable information about your teaching experience such as:
- hours spent on teaching, preparing to teach and non-teaching activities
- requirements for out-of-field teaching
- prevalence of short term contracts versus permanent employment
