2 FEBRUARY 2021
If you are interested in mentoring provisionally registered teachers (PRTs), a number of programs and a new workshop will be available in 2021.
The Department of Education and Training (DET) will again offer cross sector access to their two-day Mentoring Program. VIT will work closely with DET, Independent Schools Victoria and the Catholic Education Office in an effort to increase the reach of our mentoring training in 2021.
The Effective Mentoring Program
The Effective Mentoring Program (EMP) is a professional learning program developed and delivered as a partnership with DET, and is open to (fully) registered teachers working in government, Catholic and independent schools and early childhood services.
This free, two-day program equips participants with mentoring skills to support beginning teachers and guide them through the provisional to (full) registration process.
Previous participant's feedback has indicated that teachers found significant professional benefit from working with people from a broad range of contexts; in 2021, all programs will be combined to allow school and early childhood mentors to work together.
A number of one-day refresher seminars will be also be conducted for early childhood and school mentors who completed an EMP before 2019.
The EMP will be delivered online for Term 1 and Term 2 of 2021, given current government restrictions due to COVID-19. Face-face seminars may resume in Term 3 if permitted.
To be considered a VIT trained mentor, teachers must attend both days of the two-day program in the same year.
Other mentoring programs
While teachers from all sectors are welcome to register for the EMP, VIT has been working closely with the Victorian Catholic Dioceses and Independent Schools Victoria to extend the reach of mentoring programs across Victoria.
For more information and to book, please contact your Diocese or Independent Schools Victoria.
Mentor Coordinator Workshop
In response to feedback from our mentoring programs, VIT will again be offering a Mentor Coordinator Workshop.
This one-day workshop is designed for VIT trained mentors who manage multiple PRTs and other mentors in a supervisory role.
The online workshop will be held on Wednesday 24 March from 9am – 3pm.
Each year VIT delivers PRT seminars to provide PRTs with information and resources to assist them in moving from provisional to (full) registration. The seminars cover
- the requirements of gaining (full) registration
- evidence-based processes using the inquiry process
- professional obligations, including the Victorian Teaching Profession's Code of Conduct and Code of Ethics
- access to professional practice resources.
In 2021, VIT will be hosting a total of 30 seminars, including 3 seminars dedicated to casual relief teachers.
Due to current government restrictions as a result of COVID-19, seminars will be delivered online for Terms 1 and 2 in 2021. Further dates for online seminars and the possible resumption of face to face seminars in Terms 3 and 4 will be published later in the year.
Seminars will commence at 4pm and finish at 5pm.
Please note: some seminars are already at capacity. VIT will endeavour to provide additional webinars for teachers who are not able to secure a spot.
