Assessment of qualifications

If you have completed (or are completing) an undergraduate degree or if you have trade qualifications and industrial experience and want to know what teacher education program you are eligible for and/or what specialist teaching areas (methods) you are eligible to apply for, you can either:

  • self assess your qualifications (free of charge) using the self assessment guide and the Specialist Area Guidelines
    OR
  • request that the Institute assesses your qualifications (cost $102)
    OR
  • apply through VTAC  for a teacher education program (VTAC will assess your qualifications as part of the application process)
    OR
  • apply directly to a higher education provider for entry into a teacher education program (the higher education provider will assess your qualifications as part of the application process) .

Self assessment

The self assessment guide  (PDF – 90 KB) can be used to determine what specialist teaching areas (methods) you will be eligible for in any secondary graduate-entry program accredited under the Victorian accreditation standards.  The guide cannot be used for trade qualifications.

Specialist Area Guidelines  (PDF - 73 KB) describes the minimum qualifications required for specialist subject teachers.

Institute assessment

If you would like the Institute to assess your qualifications, the request for qualification assessment form  (PDF - 582 KB) must be completed and posted to the Institute along with certified qualifications documentation and payment. For more information, please see Frequently Asked Questions (PDF - 50 KB).

Notes

Qualifications assessment workshops for higher education providers

On a regular basis, the Institute conducts workshops for higher education staff members who assess qualifications for entry into postgraduate secondary initial teacher education programs to determine an applicant's specialist teaching areas. The workshops are free of charge and are advertised to all providers of accredited initial teacher education programs.
