The Australian Professional Teaching Standards
The Australian Professional Teaching Standards have been given Ministerial approval for implementation by the Institute during 2013. These will be used by all Australian teacher registration and accreditation authorities.
There are seven standards within the domains of knowledge, practice and engagement.

Areas of focus articulate the practice expected for each standard. For each area of focus, descriptors articulate 4 levels of capability that teachers are able to demonstrate.

Graduate Teacher Standards
Initial Teacher Education programs approved by the Institute reference the Graduate Teacher standards. Teachers graduating from these courses have reached Graduate Teacher capability and this is a requirement for registration with the Institute.
Proficient Teacher Standards
Provisionally registered teachers are required to demonstrate capability at the Proficient Teacher level to become fully registered. Teachers with full registration are required to maintain the standards at the Proficient Teacher level through the renewal of registration process.

Transition to the new standards
All teachers provisionally registered since 1/10/2012 are required to demonstrate the Proficient Teacher standards using the Institute evidence-based process to be eligible for full registration.
Teachers who have held provisional registration prior to 1/10/2012 can make an application for full registration using the old process and standards until 30/9/2013. After that time they must use the Australian standards and the process associated with them.
The Proficient Teacher standards will be used for the renewal of registration period beginning 1/10/2013.
