The Standards of Professional Practice
The Institute implemented the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers during 2013. They will be applied:
- from 1 October 2012 for all new registrants who are provisionally registered and teachers who are reapplying for provisional registration and do not apply for full registration by 30 September 2013
- from 1 October 2013 for teachers renewing their registration annually.
The previous Victorian standards may be used:
- by teachers provisionally registered prior to 1 October 2012 to apply for full registration until 30 September 2013
- by fully registered teachers until the expiry of their five year renewal of registration period.
The Australian Professional Standards for Teachers
The Australian Professional Standards for Teachers have been given Ministerial approval for implementation by the Institute during 2013. These will be used by all Australian teacher registration and accreditation authorities.
There are seven standards within the domains of knowledge, practice and engagement.
Areas of focus articulate the practice expected for each standard. For each area of focus, descriptors articulate 4 levels of capability that teachers are able to demonstrate.
Graduate Teacher Standards
Initial Teacher Education programs approved by the Institute reference the Graduate Teacher standards. Teachers graduating from these courses have reached Graduate Teacher capability and this is a requirement for registration with the Institute.
Proficient Teacher Standards
Provisionally registered teachers are required to demonstrate capability at the Proficient Teacher level to become fully registered. Teachers with full registration are required to maintain the standards at the Proficient Teacher level through the renewal of registration process.
