Victorian educators honoured in 2026 Rising Stars Awards
The Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) proudly congratulates two outstanding educators recognised among The Educator’s Rising Stars 2026, an annual showcase celebrating exceptional professionals aged 35 and under across Australia’s K–12 sector.
Now in its 11th year, the Rising Stars and School Leadership Awards highlight the impact of early-career educators nationwide. Winners were selected through a rigorous review process, with a focus on demonstrated leadership, innovation and measurable outcomes, including student growth, teacher development and initiatives that strengthen school communities.
This year’s cohort reflects the evolving demands of the profession. Amid rapid technological change, increasing workload pressures and workforce challenges, emerging educators are stepping up with adaptability, ambition and values-driven leadership.
The VIT is delighted to acknowledge two Victorian winners from Westbourne Grammar School – Alba Garcia and Sarah Loorham – who exemplify excellence in leadership, student care and educational innovation.
Alba Garcia
Deputy Director of Operations (P–12), Westbourne Grammar School
Alba Garcia has been recognised for her unwavering commitment to student wellbeing and her deeply relational approach to education. As Deputy Director of Operations (P–12), she has played a pivotal role in supporting students with complex wellbeing needs, working collaboratively with families, staff and external agencies to ensure each young person is surrounded by effective and responsive care structures.
Garcia’s work is underpinned by a strong belief that learning and wellbeing are intrinsically connected. She actively partners with community organisations to expand support networks for students and their families, demonstrating a holistic approach that extends beyond the classroom.
Her teaching philosophy draws on experiential learning and the principles of A Pedagogy of Kindness, inspired by scholar Catherine J. Denial. These foundations emphasise empathy, connection and meaningful engagement—values that are reflected in her daily practice.
Through her calm, compassionate leadership, Garcia has fostered environments where students feel safe, respected and empowered to achieve both academically and personally. Her dedication to continual reflection and improvement ensures her impact will extend well into the future.
Sarah Loorham
Deputy Head of Year 7 / Mathematics Teacher, Westbourne Grammar School
Also recognised is Sarah Loorham, whose dynamic leadership and commitment to student growth have distinguished her as a Rising Star. Beginning her career at Melton Secondary College, Loorham quickly established herself as an influential educator within the technology faculty, later taking on a leadership role that enhanced curriculum delivery and student engagement.
Since joining Westbourne Grammar School in 2022, Loorham has expanded her impact across both academic and pastoral domains. Appointed Head of House in 2023 and now serving as Deputy Head of Year 7, she has demonstrated a strong commitment to student wellbeing, particularly through trauma-informed practice.
Loorham is passionate about creating school environments where students feel safe, supported and connected. She works closely with families and colleagues to nurture resilience and belonging, while maintaining high expectations in her teaching of mathematics and technology. Her involvement in a 2024 research partnership with the University of Queensland further reflects her commitment to evidence-based approaches that enhance school culture and student outcomes.
Celebrating Emerging Leaders
The recognition of this year’s winners highlights the strength of Victoria’s emerging educator workforce. Each recipient embodies the core qualities of the Rising Stars awards—innovation, leadership and a strong commitment to improving outcomes for students and school communities.
The VIT congratulates all 2026 Rising Stars recipients and acknowledges the vital role they play in shaping the future of education.
