When can PTT (VET) be used?

PTT (VET) enables people with vocational skills and relevant Training and Assessment qualifications to be employed to teach VET subjects in Victorian secondary school.

PTT (VET) is not school specific – the holder is registered to teach the VET subject(s) listed on their grant in any Victorian secondary school.

Schools are not required to pay for the assessment of whether a grant of PTT is needed.

What qualifications do PTT (VET) applicants need?

PTT (VET) applicants must meet the relevant requirements of the Standards for Registered Training Organisations 2015 (or its successor).

How can I check whether a VET teacher already holds PTT (VET)?

All registered teachers are listed on the register of teachers.

To confirm the type of PTT an individual holds, including the subjects they can teach, employers should check the teacher’s registration card or the employer portal.

PTT (VET) holders are subject to suitability and criminal record checking as part of their application and cannot commence teaching (even under supervision) until their application has been approved by VIT.

How long will the process take?

Permission to teach is a two-step process where the school submits a request for PTT which is assessed by VIT, followed by an application completed by the individual.

Most applications take between 4-6 weeks to assess once all documentation has been submitted. In some cases, applications may be assessed more quickly.

The length of time taken to assess an application depends on the quality of documentation supplied, complexity of the assessment, and time of year. Applications can only be fully assessed once all documentation has been provided.

Schools should ensure they start the process with plenty of time for the candidates to submit their application and have it assessed by VIT so they can commence teaching without delay. We recommend starting that schools start a PTT application 7-8 weeks prior to the desired start date where possible.

You can read more about the application assessment process.

What information is accepted as evidence of fitness to teach?

The VIT’s key function is to provide for the safety and wellbeing of children by ensuring only qualified and suitable persons are teaching Victorian learners.

You will be required to provide evidence that proves your identity as well as give consent so VIT can undertake aNationally Coordinated Criminal History Check (NCCHC)on your behalf. We may carry out other criminal record checks from time to time.

Declaring physical and / or mental healthconditions

You need to declare any condition(s) that may seriously detrimentally affect your ability to undertake the duties of a teacher.

Overseas criminal record check (CRC)

If you were over the age of 18 and lived continuously in any country other than Australia for 12 months within the last 10 years, you will need to provide a certified copy of a police certificate issued by the national police service in the country you lived in.
