We are aware of an SMS scam involving VIT. Personal / identification documents should only be uploaded directly into the application via a MyVIT account or the Service Victoria app.

From 8 July 2025, individuals who have completed their teaching qualifications in a country outside of Australia must first have their qualifications pre-assessed as equivalent to an approved qualification.

Early childhood teachers

Applicants for early childhood teacher (ECT) registration must obtain an ACECQA Certificate of Equivalence and Outcome Letter (Early childhood qualification assessment) before they can apply for ECT registration.

School teachers

Applicants for teacher registration must create a MyVIT account, apply for their qualifications to be pre-assessed by VIT and pay an assessment fee.

The VIT will assess an overseas qualification to determine that there is equivalency to an Australian accredited initial teacher education (ITE) program.

While each qualification is assessed on a case-by-case basis, the following key principles are used to determine equivalency.

Principle 1 The qualification must be recognised for entry to primary / secondary teaching in the country of origin
Principle 2 The qualification must include a minimum of one year equivalent full time study load (EFTSL) of ITE including pedagogical studies
Principle 3 The qualification must include a minimum of 45 days of supervised teaching practice
Principle 4 The qualification must prepare the applicant to teach the curriculum in a primary / secondary school
Principle 5 The applicant must have completed a minimum of four (4) years of higher education in a recognised higher education institute

In determining the equivalence of an overseas qualification, VIT will refer to Country Education Profiles managed by the Commonwealth Department of Education as the authoritative reference source. The VIT may also consider the individual content of ITE programs and / or Australian Institute of Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) skills assessments.

Discipline studies in overseas primary teaching qualifications

The VIT will assess an overseas primary teaching qualification to determine if there is coverage of the key learning areas (KLAs) that are generally delivered in Australian approved curriculums, these include

  • The Arts
  • Literacy / English (including reading, writing and comprehension)
  • Health and Physical Education
  • The Humanities
  • Languages
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Technologies
Discipline studies in overseas secondary teaching qualifications

The VIT will assess an overseas secondary teaching qualification to determine if the applicant has studied a secondary teaching area that is delivered within an Australian approved curriculum.

These may include any subject delivered from Year 7 – 10 and / or within a senior secondary curriculum such as the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) (including VCE VET).

Supervised teaching practice

A minimum of 45 days of supervised teaching practice (STP) must have been completed as part of the initial teacher education (ITE) qualification in a primary / secondary school context with school-aged learners (5 - 18 years old).

STP must be completed in a primary or secondary school setting under the supervision of a qualified teacher and be formally assessed by the higher education provider.

Where STP is completed in a special school context, the STP may be accepted if it formed part of the ITE qualification and the special school context predominantly catered to primary / secondary school aged learners.

The VIT will not consider higher education-based teaching practice activities undertaken with fellow higher education students / higher education staff or teaching completed on an employed or voluntary basis outside of an ITE program.

Documentation requirements for overseas applicants
  1. Evidence of course completion and an academic transcript of the initial teacher education (ITE) qualification (translated to English if required) - if your university has provided these to you as one document, you will need to upload it twice (labelling one copy ‘academic transcript’ and the other copy ‘evidence of completion’) in order to progress this module.
  2. Documentation from the higher education provider (either within an academic transcript or official letter confirming
    1. the number of supervised teaching practice (STP) days completed (must be 45 days minimum)
    2. the setting – primary / secondary school – where the STP days were completed
    3. the age range of the students taught during the STP, and
    4. the supervision arrangements during your placement(s) by a qualified teacher.
  3. Evidence of completion(s) and academic transcript(s) of any relevant higher education study (translated to English if required).

Important information

Employment-based teaching qualifications that do not result in a formal academic award, final academic transcript and statement of compulsory supervised teaching practice issued by the higher education institution awarding the teaching qualification are not recognised in Australia, as they are not equivalent to Australian teaching qualifications.

This may include a Graduate Teacher Program, School Centred Training and research or leadership based Postgraduate Certificates in Education (PGCE) from the United Kingdom.

Accreditation to teach is different to an academic qualification and will not contribute to the qualifications required for teacher registration in Victoria.

This includes, but is not limited to, Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) from the United Kingdom, standalone Teacher Licensure from The United Staes of America and Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) certificates from the Philippines.
