The VIT recognises the impact of COVID 19 on the teaching profession, in particular casual relief teachers (CRTs) and early childhood teachers.

If teachers are unable to demonstrate at least 20 days of teaching / educational leadership / equivalent practice in the registration period 1 October 2020 to 30 September 2021, they will be provided with the option to declare that they have undertaken

• 40 days teaching at any time during the previous two years;
• 60 days over the previous three years;
• 80 days over the previous four years; or
• 100 days over the previous five years.

Teachers should keep a record of the days they complete. 

For those who were still unable to meet the requirements for the registration period 1 October 2020 to 30 September 2021 due to COVID 19, they will be given an option to declare this and renew their registration without meeting the requirement.

Any professional learning undertaken from 1 October 2020 until 30 September 2021 counts towards your 20 hours of professional learning.

The VIT acknowledges that many face-to-face professional learning activities are not taking place due to COVID-19. While this may have disrupted professional learning plans, it is expected that teachers will be able to undertake collaborative online learning, professional reading and other online professional learning activities.

For those who are still unable to meet the requirements for the registration period 1 October 2020 to 30 September 2021 due to COVID 19, they will be given an option to declare this and renew their registration without meeting the requirement.

Provisionally registered teachers (PRTs) unable to meet their professional practice requirements (80 days of teaching) and demonstrate proficiency against the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST) are encouraged to apply for a further grant of provisional registration (no more than three months before their expiry date) through their MyVIT account.

If you have been unable to complete or progress to formal teaching qualifications as a result of COVID 19, you can apply for a further grant of 12 months of permission to teach.

For teachers who are still unable to meet the requirements due to COVID 19 during 2021, this will not be an impediment. As part of their 2021 annual registration tasks, teachers will be given the option to declare that they have been impacted by COVID 19. The VIT will extend their registration for 12 months. During the registration period 1 October 2021 to 30 September 2022, they will be required to complete

• 20 days teaching or educational leadership in a school or early childhood setting
• 20 hours of professional learning activity that references the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST).
