I am returning to teach from non-practising registration. What if I can't demonstrate the 20 days' practice and / or 20 hours' professional learning requirements?

Teachers should keep a record of the days of practice and hours of professional learning they complete.

For those who were still unable to meet the requirements for the registration period 1 October 2020 to 30 September 2021 due to COVID 19, they will be given an option to declare this and renew their registration without meeting the requirement. The VIT will allow these teachers another 12 months i.e. from 1 October 2021 to 30 September 2022 to provide evidence to enable them to return to teaching from non-practising registration (20 days of teaching practice and 20 hours of professional learning).

How do I apply for non-practising registration?

If you have not met the professional practice and/or professional learning renewal requirements, or are not currently working as a teacher in Victoria you can apply for non-practising registration. This registration allows you to maintain your registration but does not require you to maintain your professional practice or progress from provisional to (full) registration.

You can stay non-practising for as long as you wish provided you pay the annual registration fee and continue to meet suitability requirements. However, you cannot work as a teacher in a Victorian school or as an early childhood teacher in a Victorian early childhood service while you hold non-practising registration.

Can a person with non-practising registration undertake the duties of a teacher?

Non-practising teachers cannot teach in any Victorian primary, secondary or special school, or be employed/engaged as a registered early childhood teacher in a Victorian education and care service or a Victorian children’s service.

If a person with non-practising registration wishes to undertake the duties of a teacher or early childhood teacher, they must successfully apply to return to teaching they can return to the classroom.
