Experienced returning registration supports teachers to re-engage with their professional practice and return to full registration with confidence.
Teachers who hold experienced returning registration have up to two years to meet the requirements for full registration.
During this time, they work alongside experienced fully registered teachers who provide feedback, guidance and support as they build evidence, reflect on their practice and reconnect with Victoria’s current teaching landscape.

Return to full registration process
Once your application for experienced returning registration has been approved, you can begin the process of returning to full registration.
As part of this process, you must complete the Return to Full Registration Pathway through your MyVIT account before applying for full registration.
The pathway guides you through five stages designed to help you demonstrate your professional practice and readiness to apply for full registration.

The Return to Full Registration Pathway is made up of five stages presented as modules
- Child Safety
- Priority Standards
- Professional Practice
- Identified Learning
- Attestation.
Through the pathway, you’ll gather evidence to show that you
- understand your child safety and professional responsibilities
- engage in professional practice, observations and discussions
- identify areas for improvement in your practice
- reconnect with current Education State priorities.
Please note: you must provide evidence for stages 1 to 4 before completing the final attestation stage.

Once you’ve completed stages 1 to 4, you’ll meet with your employer for an evidence-based discussion about your progress and professional practice. This is not a panel and does not require an inquiry.
This discussion is an opportunity to reflect on your learning and present the evidence you’ve gathered throughout the pathway. Drawing on the evidence from stages 1 to 4, your employer will consider whether you‘ve met the experienced returning registration requirements.
If your employer is satisfied that you’ve demonstrated proficiency, they can attest to your practice and recommend you for full registration.
Once your employer has provided their attestation, you can move to stage 5 and declare that you’ve met all pathway requirements.

Once you’ve completed all five stages of the pathway, you can apply for full registration through your MyVIT account.
Select the ‘Apply for full registration’ tile to
- verify your contact details
- complete suitability declarations
- provide your employer details.

To support your application, your employer must submit a recommendation report through the Employer portal.
The recommendation must be completed by a VIT fully registered
- principal
- early childhood director or service leader, or
- early childhood teacher delegate.
Once the recommendation has been submitted, we’ll assess your application and supporting documentation. If you’ve met all requirements, you’ll be granted full registration.
When your application is approved
- you’ll receive an email confirming your full registration
- your registration status will be updated on the register of teachers and your digital registration card.
Audits
You must retain a copy of all evidence submitted through the Return to Full Registration Pathway for at least two years. We may request this evidence if you are selected for audit.
Employer obligations
Supporting an experienced returning registered teacher through the Return to Full Registration Pathway is an important part of the process.
Employers have a shared responsibility to ensure their teachers meet the requirements and return to full registration within the two-year period.
