Teachers who hold experienced returning registration have two years to complete the returning to full registration process.

This work is undertaken in collaboration with other experienced fully registered teachers who can provide the experienced returning registered teacher (ERRT) with feedback and support to understand their obligations and professional responsibilities and familiarise themselves with the current teaching landscape in Victoria.

ERRTs will be able to apply for full registration when they can demonstrate

Click on each step below to find out more about the returning to full registration process.

Step 1 – Gather evidence using the Return to Full Registration Pathway

The Return to Full Registration Pathway is used by ERRTs to demonstrate the development of their knowledge and practice, and gather evidence to demonstrate they understand their child safety and professional responsibilities, engage in professional practice and learning to identify areas for improvement and reacquaint themselves with current Education State priorities.

It’s designed to guide an ERRT through the five stages of the experienced returning registration requirements, with each stage represented as a module within the pathway, including

  1. Child Safety
  2. Priority Standards
  3. Professional Practice
  4. Identified Learning
  5. Attestation

Evidence should be gathered to meet the requirements for stages 1 – 4. An ERRT can access the Return to Full Registration Pathway to complete each stage via their MyVIT account.

Useful Resource

Check out the Experienced Returning Registered Teacher Guide to find out more about completing the Return to Full Registration Pathway.

Step 2 – Present your evidence to your employer

Once an ERRT has gathered the evidence they need (stages 1 – 4), they are required to discuss and reflect on their progress through each stage and present this evidence to their employer.

During the attestation meeting (stage 5), the employer can provide confirmation if the requirements have been met and they are ready to attest to the ERRT’s proficiency by making a recommendation for full registration.

Once confirmation is received, an ERRT can complete stage 5 of the pathway by declaring they have fulfilled all requirements.

Useful Resource

Employers should check out VIT’s Experienced Returning Registered Teacher Employer Guide for more information about how to support their ERRTs returning to full registration.

Step 3 - Initiate your application for full registration

When an ERRT has undertaken the returning to full registration process, it’s time to initiate an application for full registration in their MyVIT account. This should be done once the Return to Full Registration Pathway is complete.

This is done via the ‘Apply for full registration’ tile in the ERRT’s MyVIT account. The ERRT will be asked to verify their contact details, make declarations about their suitability and provide their employer details.

Step 4 – Finalise your application for full registration

Following the attestation meeting and initiation of the full registration application, the employer will complete a recommendation report through the Employer portal .

The employer recommendation must be completed by one of the following

  • VIT fully registered principal
  • VIT fully registered early childhood Director/Service Leader
  • VIT fully registered early childhood teacher delegate.

The VIT will assess the ERRT’s application along with the recommendation report. When all requirements have been met, the ERRT will be granted full registration.

Once the ERRT’s full registration is approved, they will be emailed notification of the approval, the register of teachers will be updated with their new registration status and a new digital registration card will be issued.

An ERRT will need to retain of copy of their evidence for at least two years in case they are selected for audit by VIT.
