The Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) is governed by the VIT Council, which oversees how we regulate the teaching profession to support safe, high-quality education for all learners in Victoria.

The Council plays a critical role in setting direction, ensuring accountability, and maintaining public trust in the teaching profession. It brings together expertise from across education, regulation and the community to guide our work and uphold professional standards.

About our governance

The VIT Council is supported by a group of committees that provide detailed oversight and advice in specific areas. These committees enable rigorous, informed decision-making by

  • examining key issues in depth
  • providing specialist expertise and advice
  • supporting transparent and consistent processes
  • ensuring VIT meets its regulatory responsibilities.

Together, the Council and its committees form a governance structure that balances accountability with practical, informed guidance.

Transparency and accountability

We're committed to transparency, integrity and accountability in how we govern, make decisions and use public resources.

As part of this commitment, we publish information about procurement, contracts and organisational disclosures. These practices support strong governance and oversight by the VIT Council and its committees and help maintain public trust in our work.
