The Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) is an independent statutory authority for the teaching profession, whose primary function is to regulate members of the teaching profession.

It is a legal requirement for all teachers to be registered with VIT in order to be employed in a school or early childhood education and care service or Victorian children’s service.

The VIT is aware of recent media stories relating to teacher conduct at St Kevin’s College.

Part of VIT’s role is to investigate the conduct, competence and fitness to teach of registered teachers, and whether a registered teacher’s ability to practice as a teacher or early childhood teacher is seriously affected because of an impairment.

VIT receives reportable conduct referrals from the Commission for Children and Young People (CCYP), Victoria Police (charges and findings of guilt) as well as complaints from other sources including parents and employers.

In all cases, the VIT must consider the safety and wellbeing of children, including by taking into account community expectations. This forms part of our legislative obligations and helps inform the way we assess risk, the way we categorise and prioritise matters, what action we take, and how we make our decisions.
