Happy World Teachers’ Day - Friday 27 October 2023

Every day, Victorian teachers go above and beyond for learners and their communities. This World Teachers' Day is the perfect time to stop, reflect and say thank you for the significant role teachers play in improving student outcomes and shaping their lives for future success.

Victorian Government Tutor Learning initiative

"As I wrote this message, the notion of ‘investment’ was reverberating in my head. The Victorian Government recently announced a very significant investment package, of some $230 million, in teachers and teaching. This package included what oldies like me would consider ‘back to the future’ scholarships for those undertaking teaching degrees. In explanation, if one was needed, our then Premier said, ‘Teachers change lives, it’s a simple as that’.

Which is right of course. However, investment in teachers is not only a sign of a sophisticated and civilised society; it is also a hard-headed investment in human capital and in our future. Investments in the human capital of our teachers build the human capital of our next generation.

Teachers know this in their heads and hearts. They ‘invest’ their talents, intelligence and energy in their profession and their students through many long, hard hours and years!

I am very appreciative of the government’s investment in the profession from which we all benefit but want to applaud and thank the incredible, selfless investment in the next generation and our future; an investment made by all our teachers everywhere, every day.

VIT Chairperson, Lesley Lamb
