Internship ITE Policy released
VIT has published the Internship ITE Policy to support VIT’s overarching obligation to raise the quality of teaching in relation to internship programs.
The policy outlines the expectations of ITE providers offering Internship ITE programs. This includes the timing of the internship component within the program to ensure the preparedness of pre-service teachers (PSTs) undertaking an internship. The policy takes into account the PSTs’ understanding of workplace policies in relation to child safety and wellbeing prior to their internship commencement.
While they are permitted to teach, a holder of permission to teach (PTT) is still a PST and is progressing towards the Graduate Teacher level of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST). A PTT (Internship) holder should not be undertaking additional duties of a teacher beyond teaching the subjects approved under their PTT grant.
PTT (Internship) holders must still complete all requirements of their ITE program, including being observed, provided with feedback and assessed by a school-based mentor on their teaching practice. Course completion should be a priority for PTT (Internship) holders to ensure they successfully complete their qualifications.
ITE Providers are encouraged to read the Internship ITE Policy and share it with their colleagues developing Innovative ITE programs.
