Launching digital registration cards in 2025
Earlier this year, the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) announced its plan to phase out physical registration cards and transition to a digital-only solution.
Currently, new applicants who are granted teacher registration or permission to teach (PTT) are being issued with a digital VIT registration card once their application has been approved.
From August 2025, existing registered teachers and early childhood teachers will be issued with a digital VIT registration card once their 2025-26 annual registration application has been approved.
Want early access? If you’re a registered teacher or early childhood teacher and don’t want to wait for annual registration, log in to your MyVIT account, click on ‘Manage registration’, then ‘Access your digital registration card’ and follow the instructions to set up your new digital VIT registration card.
The VIT’s transition to digital registration cards, in conjunction with the register of teachers and Employer portal, demonstrates VIT’s risk-based approach to registration and the importance placed on child safety. Learn more about the benefits of digital registration cards and why it matters.
Reducing the risk to child safety
A digital registration card is a safer way to verify teacher registration in Victoria. What we mean by this is using a digital registration card reduces the risk to child safety.
A teacher’s registration can change at any time (e.g. become expired, placed on interim suspension or cancelled), therefore physical cards are point-in-time verification and only valid on the day they are printed.
Employers and teachers who rely solely on physical cards to verify teacher registration are at serious risk of contributing to a range of regulatory issues, including child safety concerns and instances of unregistered teaching practice
The register of teachers, Employer portal and digital registration cards are all linked to VIT’s teacher registration system and updated immediately upon a change in registration, and are therefore the only real-time methods to prove a teacher’s registration status.
This supports our vision to ensure that Victorian learners have the best teachers in their education setting at all times.
Making it easier to prove teacher registration
Not only is it easy to set up, but a digital VIT registration card is easy to use! Accessible via the Service Victoria app, a digital registration card provides employers and teachers with convenient access to real-time proof of registration.
Using the same digital wallet that stores Victorian digital driver licences, teachers can easily retrieve and show their registration details via their smart phone or tablet device whenever they need to prove their registration status.
Employers scan the QR code in the digital card to confirm the teacher’s registration status via the register of teachers for real-time verification.

Considerations for employers
The introduction of digital registration cards may impact the employment, induction and teacher registration management process for some Victorian schools and early childhood services.
Principals, early childhood managers, employers and staff responsible for teacher recruitment / registration matters should review their current teacher registration verification process and consider the administrative implications that digital registration cards will have for their specific context.
The following quick tips may assist with the change management required to accommodate the digital transition in your school or early childhood service.

---|---|---|
Employing / onboarding / inducting new teachers | Request to see the teacher’s physical registration card to confirm their registration details | Request the teacher’s VIT registration number and check their registration category, status and expiry date via the register of teachers (in advance if possible) |
Request to see the teacher’s digital VIT registration card, scan the QR code and check their registration category, status and expiry date via the register of teachers | ||

Managing casual relief teachers (CRTs) on site | Request to see the teacher’s physical registration card to confirm their registration details | Request the teacher’s VIT registration number and check their registration category, status and expiry date via the register of teachers (in advance if possible) |
Request to see the teacher’s digital VIT registration card, scan the QR code and check their registration category, status and expiry date via the register of teachers |
There is a common misunderstanding among employers and teachers that registration cards are required to verify teacher registration.
Registered teachers don't need a card to prove their registration. Employers are regularly reminded that if a teacher’s name appears on the register of teachers and can be searched for in the Employer portal, then the teacher holds valid VIT registration.
Employers are encouraged to use the register of teachers as the highest level of verification and source of truth, and as digital registration cards use the same live data, this ensures teachers and employers are relying on the most accurate source of information.
Stay tuned for more information and support about digital registration cards in the upcoming employer circulars.
