The VIT will be closed Friday 26 September for the AFL Grand Final public holiday.

The Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) is transitioning from physical registration cards to a digital solution for a safer and more convenient way to verify teacher registration in Victoria. A digital registration card provides registered teachers, early childhood teachers and employers with convenient access to real-time proof of registration status.

To learn more about digital VIT registration cards, read our frequently asked questions below.

What is a digital VIT registration card?

A digital VIT registration card gives Victorian registered teachers convenient access to real-time proof of registration.

It’s a digital version of the current physical registration card and lives in the Service Victoria app, right alongside other credentials including a Victorian digital driver licence or Working with Children Check card.

Any teacher who holds current registration with VIT is eligible for a digital card.

A digital card includes a teacher’s

  • registration category and status
  • VIT registration number
  • expiry date
  • conditions on their registration (if any)

The card also shows that registered teachers are exempt from requiring a separate Working with Children Check.

Who can get a digital VIT registration card?

Any teacher who holds current registration with VIT is eligible for a digital VIT registration card.

If a teacher's registration is suspended, expired or cancelled, the teacher is not

When will digital VIT registration cards be available?

Currently, new applicants who are granted teacher registration or permission to teach (PTT) are issued with a digital registration card once their application has been approved.

From August 2025, existing registered teachers and early childhood teachers will be issued with a digital registration card once their 2025-26 annual registration application has been approved.

Alternatively, any registered teacher can access their digital card by simply opening the Service Victoria app or downloading from the Google Play store or Apple App store. You’ll need to log in or create an account, tap ‘Wallet’ and follow the prompts to enter your family name, date of birth and VIT registration number.

Once your application for teacher registration, PTT or annual registration has been approved, you'll receive a confirmation email from VIT with the following instructions (also available via the ‘Access my digital registration card’ tile in your MyVIT account).

To access your new digital card, simply open the Service Victoria app or download from the Google Play store or Apple App store.

You’ll need to log in or create an account, tap ‘Wallet’ and follow the prompts to enter your

Your digital card will be available in the Service Victoria app wallet on your smartphone or tablet whenever you need to prove your registration status.

For more information, read our digital registration card User Guide and Support Pack.

Remember you don't need a card to prove you’re registered to teach. Employers know that if you are listed on the register of teachers and the Employer portal then you’re able to teach.

What if I don’t know my VIT registration number?

To find your VIT registration details, log in to your MyVIT account or search your name on the register of teachers.

How long does it take to get a digital VIT registration card?

Once you have successfully completed the set-up process, your digital card will be available within 5 minutes. Service Victoria will email you when it’s on its way.

How do I use a digital VIT registration card?

Once you’ve logged into the Service Victoria app

  • click on the ‘Wallet’ section and tap on your ‘VIT registration card’
  • pull down to refresh or click the ‘Tap here to refresh’ button
  • show your employer your registration details
  • scan the QR code using the Service Victoria app scanner on your employer's smart phone or tablet device (not required to be logged in)
  • confirm your registration status via the register of teachers.

A green tick identifies a ‘current’ status and a red exclamation mark identifies a ‘non-practising’ status.

If you’re fully or provisionally registered, or hold permission to teach (PTT), you are permitted to teach and undertake the duties of a teacher.

If you’re non-practising, you are not permitted to teach or undertake the duties of a teacher until you successfully apply to return to teach.

Check out our User Guide, Support Pack and Card Checker Guide for everything you need to know about digital cards.

What is the QR code for?

You can share the QR code from the digital VIT registration card with your employer so they can verify your registration status. It’s the same as your employer searching your name on the register of teachers or the Employer portal.

Employers scan the QR code to instantly verify your registration status because it pulls live data from VIT’s registration system.

Employers verifying your status needs the Service Victoria app to do this. If they scan your QR code with any other scanning tool (e.g. iPhone camera), they’ll arrive at a page asking them to download the Service Victoria app.

Does a digital VIT registration card show that I'm a VIT trained mentor?

In time, VIT will roll out a new feature on the digital card that identifies if a teacher is a VIT trained mentor. This feature will

  • acknowledge a VIT trained mentor’s experience and leadership in the workplace
  • assist employers who are looking to recruit experienced teachers to support their provisionally registered teachers (PRTs) move to full registration
  • assist an early childhood employer to verify if a registered teacher is a VIT trained mentor when seeking a mentor and workplace recommendation panel member for their provisionally registered early childhood teachers who are completing the Inquiry process.
What is a digital wallet?

The Service Victoria mobile app allows you to store digital versions of cards, licenses and permits.

Your digital VIT registration card replaces your existing physical registration card and lives inside your digital wallet within the Service Victoria app.

Digital VIT registration cards provide convenient and accurate proof of your teacher registration status.

Why is VIT transitioning from physical to digital registration cards?

The Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) is transitioning from physical registration cards to a digital solution for a safer and more convenient way to verify teacher registration in Victoria.

A digital VIT registration card provides teachers and employers with convenient access to real-time proof of registration because it pulls live data from VIT’s registration system.

Employers can scan the QR code to instantly verify a teacher’s registration status, which provides for the safety and wellbeing of children and young people.

Currently, teachers can prove their registration status by directing their employer to the register of teachers or Employer portal, or by showing their employer a physical registration card.

A teacher's registration can change at any time (e.g. become suspended or cancelled), therefore physical cards are point-in-time verification and only valid on the day they are printed.

Employers and teachers who rely solely on physical cards to verify teacher registration are at serious risk of contributing to a range of regulatory issues including child safety and instances of unregistered teaching practice

The register of teachers, Employer portal and digital registration card are all linked to VIT’s teacher registration system and updated immediately upon a change in registration and are therefore the only safe and accurate methods to prove a teacher's registration status.

Communities across Victoria can have peace of mind that digital registration cards are reducing the risk to child safety and keeping schools and early childhood centres safe.

What is the difference between a physical and digital VIT registration card?

Digital VIT registration cards display the same registration details as physical cards - making it easier than ever for Victorian teachers and early childhood teachers to prove their registration status, right from their smartphone.

Physical cards become outdated once they are printed because a teacher’s registration can change at any time (e.g. become suspended or cancelled).

The benefit of a digital card is it’s always up to date – pulling live data from VIT’s registration system.

This means that employers can scan the QR code to instantly verify a teacher’s registration status, reducing the risk to child safety and helping to keep schools and early childhood centre safe.

A digital registration card lives in the Service Victoria app, right alongside other credentials including a Victorian digital driver licence or Working with Children Check card.

To verify a teacher’s registration status

  1. open the VIT registration card in the digital wallet
  2. pull down to refresh or click the ‘Tap here to refresh’ button on the bottom of the card
  3. view a green tick for a ‘current’ status or a red exclamation mark for a ‘non-practising’ status
  4. scan the QR code using the Service Victoria app scanner on a separate mobile or tablet device (not required to be logged in)
  5. verify the digital VIT registration card is authentic by confirming the teacher's registration status via the register of teachers.

Check out our User Guide, Support Pack and Card Checker Guide for everything you need to know about digital cards.

What are the benefits of a digital VIT registration card?

The digital registration card solution will improve the registration experience, provide for the safety and wellbeing of children and young people, and deliver a range of benefits for teachers, employers and the wider teaching profession.

Can I still use / request a physical registration card?

In September 2024, the majority of registered teachers and early childhood teachers were issued with a physical registration card that’s due to expire on 30 September 2025.

The VIT stopped producing physical registration cards in early 2025, and all registered teachers will transition to digital cards only during the 2025-26 annual registration period.

Employers and teachers who rely solely on physical cards to verify teacher registration are at serious risk of contributing to a range of regulatory issues including child safety and instances of unregistered teaching practice

For this reason, VIT will no longer offer physical cards and teachers will not be able to request a physical card as a form of teacher registration verification.

What if I don’t want a digital VIT registration card?

There is a common misunderstanding among employers and teachers that registration cards are required to verify teacher registration. And it’s ok if you don’t choose to access your new digital VIT registration card either.

Registered teachers don't need a physical or digital card to prove their registration. Employers are regularly reminded that if a teacher’s name appears on the register of teachers and can be searched for in the Employer portal, then the teacher holds valid VIT registration.

The register of teachers, Employer portal and digital registration cards are all linked to VIT’s teacher registration system and updated immediately upon a change in registration and are therefore the only safe and accurate methods to prove a teacher's registration status.

Please be assured that VIT does not wish to force any teachers to use a digital registration card. Those who choose not to access their digital card will be able to rely on the register of teachers or Employer portal for proof of registration.

What if I don’t own a smartphone?

There is a common misunderstanding among employers and teachers that physical registration cards are required to verify teacher registration. And it’s ok if you don’t own a smart phone to access your new digital VIT registration card either.

Registered teachers don't need a physical or digital card to prove their registration. Employers are regularly reminded that if a teacher’s name appears on the register of teachers and can be searched for in the Employer portal, then the teacher holds valid VIT registration.

The register of teachers, Employer portal and digital registration cards are all linked to VIT’s teacher registration system and updated immediately upon a change in registration, and therefore the only accurate and safe methods to prove a teacher's registration status.

Please be assured that VIT does not wish to force any teachers to use a digital registration card. Those who do not have a smartphone will be able to rely on the register of teachers or Employer portal for proof of registration.

If a digital VIT registration card is free, what am I paying registration fees for?

Teacher registration fees contribute to the operation of VIT’s wide range of statutory functions that are mandated by legislation.

These functions extend well beyond registering teachers to ensure only qualified and suitable persons are eligible to work in Victorian schools and early childhood services and the production of registration cards.

The VIT approves and accredits initial teacher education programs that prepare early career teachers for working in Victoria, and supports beginner teachers to enter the profession and develop their practice through professional standards.

The VIT also investigates instances of misconduct, incompetence or lack of fitness to teach. This work is critical and provides for the safety and wellbeing of children.

All of this work is completed on a cost recovery basis, with VIT’s operational costs funded through revenue from teacher registration fees.

Although VIT reports to the Minister for Education, it is not part of the Department of Education (DE) and does not receive any direct government funding.

Can I use a digital VIT registration card to access discounts related to my teaching role?

The purpose of verifying teacher registration is to ensure only qualified and suitable persons are registered to teach in a Victorian school or early childhood service.

While registered teachers don't need a physical or digital card to prove their registration, they may wish to use their digital card to seek discounted rates for various activities and products related to their teaching role e.g. Melbourne Museum, Zoos Victoria.

Please note: arrangements for teacher discounts are not affiliated with VIT and sit outside of our legislated functions. Any discount provided to a registered teacher is at the discretion of the provider.

Can I take a screenshot of a digital VIT registration card to provide proof of registration?

A digital VIT registration card provides teachers and employers with convenient access to real-time proof of registration because it pulls live data from VIT’s registration system.

Employers are advised not to accept a hard or soft copy of a digital registration card i.e. screenshot or PDF, and to seek proof of registration by checking the register of teachers or their Employer portal

The register of teachers, Employer portal and digital registration cards are all linked to VIT’s teacher registration system and updated immediately upon a change in registration, and therefore the only safe and accurate methods to prove a teacher’s registration status.

The Service Victoria app restricts users from taking a screenshot of a digital registration card. The screenshot restriction was introduced during the digital drivers licence state-wide rollout as an extra security control and restricts users from sharing their registration details outside of the Service Victoria app or editing a screenshot to falsify their registration details.

Due to the complexity of the implementation on iOS, the screenshot restriction is currently only available on Android devices. Service Victoria is planning a restriction solution for iOS in the near future.

What is the digital VIT registration card pilot program?

In July 2024, the digital VIT registration card pilot program trialled the implementation of digital cards among a sample of schools and early childhood services across Victoria.

To plan for the digital transition, the pilot program ran for six weeks to understand the range of challenges employers may face when implementing digital cards in their workplaces.

The pilot program included two Victorian schools and one early childhood organisation to gauge the breadth of potential barriers experienced across different workplaces, including metro and regional schools and services with low to high enrolment numbers.

The findings of the pilot program will be used to inform VIT’s implementation and communications strategies for the state-wide rollout.

I’m a principal / early childhood manager, can I continue to use physical registration cards in my school / early childhood service?

After 30 September 2025, the majority of physical registration cards will expire and no longer be a valid form of teacher registration verification.

Remember teachers don't need a card to prove they’re registered to teach. If a teacher is listed on the register of teachers and the Employer portal then they’re able to teach.

I’m a principal / early childhood manager, how can I seamlessly transition from physical cards to digital cards?

Introducing digital registration cards may impact the employment, induction and registration process for your school or early childhood service.

We understand that change can be tricky. But the protection of children and young people through easy access to live teacher registration data is worth it.

The VIT recommends all schools and early childhood services update their current practice to incorporate the register of teachers, Employer portal and digital registration cards.

For example, during the employment and induction process your current practice may be to ask the teacher to provide their physical registration card to confirm they hold current registration. However, will the introduction of digital cards now you can

  • request the teacher’s VIT registration number to check the register of teachers prior to finalising the employment process
  • check a form of photo ID and the digital registration card in person upon employment or induction, then scan the QR code and verify their registration details via the register of teachers.

For more advice to help prepare you for this change and take the stress out of transitioning to digital cards, read our employer tips.
