Mentoring for provisionally registered early childhood teachers

Gowrie Victoria is a leader in the early childhood education sector, and a strong advocate for children and young people.

In addition to six early learning services across Melbourne, Gowrie Victoria offers accredited early childhood qualifications through a registered training organisation (RTO) and professional learning programs that include coaching, mentoring and customised training.

On behalf of the Department of Education and Training, Gowrie Victoria has developed a mentoring program to support provisionally registered early childhood teachers (ECTs) through the moving to full registration process.

Teachers who hold provisional registration have two years to move their practice from the Graduate to the Proficient teacher level of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST).

This work is undertaken in collaboration with other experienced fully registered teachers, or mentors, who can provide the provisionally registered teacher (PRT) with feedback and support in the development of their practice.

The Gowrie Victoria mentoring program runs for 3-5 months, and includes three onsite observation and reflection sessions.

In between these sessions, mentors provide support to further develop specific areas, gather evidence of professional practice and complete the Inquiry process.
