National Reconciliation Week 2025
National Reconciliation Week (NRW) runs from 27 May to 3 June each year, and is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements as well as to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
This year's theme, Bridging Now to Next, calls on everyone to step forward together, to look ahead and continue pushing forward as past lessons guide us.
Teaching learners from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds
Professional learning undertaken for teaching learners from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds should meet descriptors 1.4 and 2.4 of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST), however it may also meet other descriptor(s) of the APST depending on the type of professional learning undertaken.
You should consider modifications to the curriculum and / or practice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander learners to access learning.
It's not always possible to know if you have an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander learner in your group, as you might not have all the information. You should assume that that you have Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander learners in your groups, as whether people choose to identify can be complex.
Consider
- how your teaching pedagogy is appropriate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander learners
- how you can link your activities and approaches to strategies that are known to be appropriate for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander learners.

Events
Every year workplaces, schools, early childhood settings, community groups, reconciliation groups and people right across the country host a whole range of events.
Search for event ideas for your school / early childhood service or create your own event and add it to the National Reconciliation Week calendar.
Posters and Resources
There are numerous ways to get your school or service involved in learning more about reconciliation. The Victorian Aboriginal Education Association Incorporated (VAEAI) resources, Narragunnawali resources, Victorian Inclusion Agency resources and Learn our Truth campaign shares teaching and learning ideas for early childhood, primary and secondary school students and also professional learning courses for teachers.
