The VIT assesses a large number of applications submitted ahead of the new year to help schools and early childhood services start the year with the teachers they need.

To make sure teachers commence teaching smoothly, we prioritise applicants with a January start date. Applicants can add or update their start date at any time through their MyVIT account.

How we keep applications moving

We support and work with employers to finalise applications as quickly as possible. To help continue progressing applications without delay, please ask your applicants to

  • check their email and SMS regularly
  • respond promptly to any requests from VIT
  • ensure all required documents are uploaded in their MyVIT account.

If further information is needed, we’ll contact the applicant directly. We ask that you reach out to us only if your enquiry is urgent, so we can stay focused on completing assessments for the start of the year.

How long does an assessment take?

Once all required documentation has been submitted, applications can take up to 6 weeks to assess. Many assessments are completed sooner, and we continue to streamline our processes to support employers at this important time of year.

What can extend the assessment timeframe?

Some applications may take longer due to

  • Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Checks, which take time to be processed and returned
  • pending course completion evidence for some initial teacher education graduates - VIT is actively sourcing this information
  • missing documents at the time of application, which can require follow‑up with the applicant.

The VIT remains focused on moving these applications forward as quickly and fairly as possible so teachers can begin the year ready to teach without delays.

Schools and early childhood services play an important role in supporting teachers and learners across Victoria. Your cooperation helps ensure more teachers are ready to begin the year with confidence.
