Casual relief teachers (CRTs) – sometimes referred to as substitute teachers – are teachers who work in a casual, relief or emergency basis.
CRTs do not have a separate registration category, as they can hold either provisional or full registration. Depending on their qualifications and registration category, CRTs can work in school or early childhood services.
Teachers are not allowed to work in settings that do not fall within the scope of their registration type unless they hold dual registration. Visit the FAQs page to find out more.
Registration requirements and how to apply
All CRTs are bound by the same registration requirements as other teachers holding the same category of registration.

Ongoing obligations
All teachers, regardless of their registration category, are required to meet certain obligations in order to maintain their registration.
For CRTs, these obligations are consistent with the provisional or full registration requirements.
