Changes to NCCHC document requirements

Understand which documents you need to provide to undertake a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check (NCCHC).

Registered teachers are required to undertake a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check (NCCHC) once every four to five years* from the date they registered with VIT.

The Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC), has recently changed its document requirements for NCCHCs and now only accepts current identification documents. Identification documents that have expired or are missing expiry dates can no longer be used.

*If registration was granted before 30 September, the NCCHC is conducted as part of the annual registration process during the fourth year.

Annual registration

If you are due to complete a NCCHC as part of your annual registration this year, you will need to provide up-to-date identification documents.

To avoid delays during the annual registration period, those teachers due to complete their NCCHC will be provided with instructions on how to update their identification documents securely, via their MyVIT account.

These teachers will be asked to provide three (3) different identity documents and verify that these documents belong to them either

  1. instantly via Service Victoria using a smartphone; or
  2. via a verification of identity form signed by an authorised third party.

To avoid delays, we recommend using the identity documents suggested in the application (Australian passport, Australian drivers licence and physical Medicare card), and verifying your identity using the Service Victoria app.

If you are using the Service Victoria app, why not access your new digital VIT registration card while you’re at it?

The VIT is transitioning from physical registration cards to a digital solution.

To access your new digital card, simply open the Service Victoria app or download from the Google Play store or Apple App store. Login using the same account used to verify your identity above, tap 'Wallet' and follow the prompts to enter your family name, date of birth and registration number.

Your digital VIT registration card will be available in the Service Victoria app wallet on your smartphone or tablet whenever you need to prove your registration status.

Documents required to complete a NCCHC

In order to process a NCCHC, teachers are required to provide the following information via their MyVIT account

  • country, state and town of birth
  • proof of identity documentation
  • name history including any aliases and supporting documentation for any name changes such as a marriage certificate or deed poll, and
  • full residential address history – both within Australia and overseas – for the past five years.

All proof of identity documents provided must be current at the time of submission. Any documents with expiration dates in the past will not be accepted and may delay assessment of an application.

Tips for updating your ID documents

  1. Use the suggested identity documents (Australian passport or Australian visa, Australian driver licence and Medicare card)
  2. Enter the initial exactly as it appears on your driver licence (e.g. ‘K’, not ‘Kevin’)
  3. Enter the given name(s) exactly as they appear on your passport (e.g. for ‘John Kevin Smith’, the given name(s) are ‘John Kevin’)
  4. Enter the details from your international passport that holds the visa, not the visa itself
  5. Include both the front and back of any uploaded documents (e.g. driver licence or birth certificate)
  6. The requirements to verify your birth certificate depend on the state or territory you were born in. If you’re unsure, see examples of birth certificates by state and territory to find where key details are found.
  7. If submitting a Verification of Identity Form, ensure its printed and signed by an authorised person (e.g. school principal, pharmacist)
