Resources to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander learners and promote reconciliation
The VIT has partnered with the Victorian Aboriginal Education Association Inc. (VAEAI) and the Department of Education and Training (Koorie Outcomes Division) to deliver additional support for teachers in better meeting the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander learners.
In anticipation and support of National Sorry Day on 26 May, we’ve compiled a list of helpful resources to support teachers with the learning in their classrooms.
Resources
These resources include protocols for teaching Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, guidance on using Koorie cultural expressions in the classroom as well as information about significant events such as the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day.
Koorie English Teacher Guidance Package
The Package and its associated webinar modules are useful in developing teachers’ pedagogy and actively strengthening Koorie literacy outcomes.
The VAEAI website contains a range of downloadable curriculum and education resources, policies, strategies and other publications.
- Koorie Education Calendar 2021 – A great tool for planning the year ahead.
- Koorie Perspectives in Curriculum bulletins – Content and activities directly linked to the Victorian Curriculum.
Strategies for teaching Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander learners webinar
Specifically designed to target Standard 1.4 of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST), these webinars provide the necessary background information that all teachers need to be aware of when creating a truly inclusive and safe classroom environment.
The VIT is currently working with VAEAI and the Koorie Outcomes Division to develop resources and webinars around the cross-curriculum priority expressed in Standard 2.4 of the APST, which focuses on promoting understanding and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to promote reconciliation between Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Australians. More information will be available in the second half of the year.
