What does it mean to be a teacher?

In celebration of World Teacher’s Day, we asked registered teachers and early childhood teachers from across Victoria to show us what it means to them to be a teacher or educational leader in 2023.

“What I love most about teaching is the relationships you can build with the learners when you take them outside of the formal education context, such as camps, and into an unusual and challenging environment.”

Payal - Noble Park English Language School

“These are the eight different languages in my class, including my first language and English. Being an EAL teacher in a new arrival setting, this incredible diversity is not just based on first languages but also culture, educational background, and English proficiency. It makes my heart swell with joy and pride to see my students embark on their journey towards beginning their life in Australia.”

Jessica – Christian College Geelong

“The most rewarding part of being a language teacher is being able to submerge my class into a different culture through language and experiences; learning about the world brings us all closer together.”

Nicole – Meadows Primary School

“We have created multiple spaces to support students’ sensory needs and provide opportunities to use movement to regulate emotions. Watching students chose strategies to get themselves ready for learning fills me with pride.“

“I love taking them out of the classroom to see live theatre. The look on their faces when they experience their first ever professional production is a moment I could bottle up. Pure joy, love and passion for the Performing Arts.”
