Growing enrolments in initial teacher education (ITE) programs show a strengthening pipeline of future teachers across Victoria.
New insights in VIT’s Initial Teacher Education Data Insights highlight increasing commencements, strong graduate outcomes and broad coverage across key teaching areas.
The VIT plays a key role by accrediting ITE programs and monitoring outcomes. Ensuring a strong supply of well-prepared teachers is essential to the safety, quality and integrity of the teaching workforce.

- 7,151 students commenced an ITE program in 2024, a 24% increase from 2023
- 152 accredited ITE programs across Victoria
- 19,601 pre-service teachers enrolled
- 81% of graduates register within 12 months of completing their qualification
- Postgraduate secondary pathways are growing strongly, with a 66% increase in commencements
- Humanities and Social Sciences, English, and Health and Physical Education remain leading secondary specialisations
Pathways supporting a diverse pipeline
VIT-approved pathway programs continue to support diverse candidates to enter teaching. In 2024:
- 767 students completed a pathway program
- 91% transitioned into an ITE program
These programs help prospective teachers build the skills and attributes needed to succeed and align with national standards.
