Thousands of new teachers for Victoria

As students across Victoria return to the classroom, they’ll be seeing many new smiling faces at the front of the room.

More than 2,200 new teachers and early childhood teachers have been registered in recent weeks ready for the start of the school year. These provisionally registered teachers have all successfully graduated from a recognised initial teacher education program or equivalent.

These recent graduates are joined by more than 1,200 new permission to teach (PTT) holders. PTT means that schools can plug workforce gaps unable to be filled by registered teachers.

New VIT Chief Executive Officer, Martin Fletcher, welcomed the significant number of registrants ready to teach in 2025.

“As of today, there are more than 5,600 additional teachers available to support schools and early childhood services across Victoria who weren’t registered in October last year,” said Mr Fletcher.

“This has been an exceptionally busy time for VIT as we aim to do everything we can to ensure that that every student has a suitable teacher in their classroom.

“While the numbers are encouraging, there is no room for complacency given the workforce challenges facing the education sector across Australia. VIT is continuing to look at ways to streamline the registration process to ease the strain on our schools and early childhood services while still ensuring safe, suitable and qualified teachers.”
