Thousands of new teachers ready to make a difference in 2026

As the 2026 school year gets underway, we’re excited to share that more than 6,600 teachers have successfully gained registration between 1 October 2025 and 28 January 2026. Each approval represents someone ready to step into a classroom, support students, and contribute to the strength of Victoria’s teaching profession.

A strong start to the year

Across this period

  • 5,497 people achieved initial registration, confirming they meet the standards to join the profession
    • this includes 757 applicants with qualifications from overseas
    • 2,062 indicated they plan to begin teaching in Term 1, 2026
  • 1,170 Permission to Teach (PTT) applications were approved
    • 437 also signalled a Term 1 start date.

These figures reflect only those who reached the finish line and gained registration, offering a clear view of the educators now ready to teach.

Welcoming new graduates

A large portion of these approvals—around 1,700 to 2,100—are likely early career teachers who recently completed their initial teacher education. While not all applicants provide their expected graduation details or start dates, the trend shows a strong group of new graduates preparing to begin their teaching journey.

Behind every approval is a person committed to supporting students and schools. These numbers reflect the dedication of teachers entering or returning to the profession, as well as the effort of teams who support them through the registration process.

Together, they help ensure Victoria continues to have a confident, capable and well-prepared teaching workforce.

One new graduate described their experience navigating the registration process

“I found the VIT application process really simple to navigate — I didn’t know much about how to apply, but once I went to the website it was easy to work through. My university explained what VIT registration meant, but not the practical steps, so I just followed the process online and it only took about half an hour.

I’m excited to start teaching this year, but I’m still learning where to find information about beginning the VIT induction. People keep mentioning a first‑year completion grant, but I’m not sure what that is yet. Overall, the registration experience itself was straightforward, and I’m looking forward to getting started in my new role.”

Looking ahead with optimism

We’re proud to welcome every newly registered teacher and PTT holder. Their enthusiasm and commitment make a real difference in classrooms and communities across the state.

Here’s to a strong, positive start to 2026—and to the teachers who make it possible.
