Updates to Program Standard 3.5

Understand what the changes mean for your programs.

In 2024, an Addendum to the Accreditation of initial teacher education programs in Australia (Standards and Procedures) was published.

Earlier in the year, we shared the new changes to the accreditation of initial teacher education (ITE) program standards and procedures.

Further information is now available regarding Program Standard 3.5, the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) and the changes which took effect immediately.

The changes require

  • all pre-service teachers to attempt LANTITE in the first year of their ITE program
  • ITE providers have processes in place to accept First Nations language proficiency as an acceptable alternative standard to LANTITE.

ITE providers are required to submit a TEEP implementation application form – Program Standard 3.5 by the end of September.

Pathway programs

The changes to Program Standard 3.5 do not affect the criteria for pathway programs into ITE and no changes are required in response to these reforms.

The VIT has the following advice regarding students entering an ITE program via an approved pathway program:

The VIT does not consider a student enrolled in a pathway program to be undertaking an accredited ITE program.

Therefore, if a student from a pathway program is eligible to enter the second year of an ITE program, the student should be encouraged to attempt LANTITE as soon as practicable on entering the ITE program (or advised of the acceptable alternative to provide evidence of First Nations language proficiency).
