Over 1,000 new overseas qualified teachers supporting Victoria’s workforce

The Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) has reached an important milestone in our work to support Victoria’s teaching workforce, with over 1,000 overseas qualified teachers now registered to teach, following assessment through the overseas qualifications function.

Achieved after 10 months of our overseas qualifications function being in operation, this accomplishment reflects VIT’s commitment to responsive regulation, workforce sustainability and maintaining high professional standards.

This work supports Victoria’s schools by enabling qualified teachers to enter classrooms sooner, while maintaining the integrity of the registration process that protects children and young people.

Clearer pathways to registration

The overseas qualifications function provides earlier and clearer assessment of overseas teaching qualifications. This helps prospective teachers better understand their eligibility and make informed decisions about migrating to Victoria. Registration decisions are then made once teachers commit to moving.

Part of broader reform

This milestone aligns with VIT’s broader reform program, which aims to:
• improve the assessment of overseas teaching qualifications; and
• modernise the permission to teach (PTT) framework.

Together, these reforms support a more transparent, flexible and consistent regulatory approach.

A collaborative effort

This achievement reflects strong collaboration between VIT’s Overseas Qualifications team, Accreditation Team and Teacher Education and Registration (TER) team. Their shared focus and problem‑solving have been critical to the success of the function.

Supporting a strong, diverse and well‑supported teaching workforce remains central to VIT’s role.

Thank you to the teams involved for their collaboration, and a warm welcome to the 1,000+ teachers now entering Victorian schools.
