Unregistered teaching prosecution - 1 June 2026

The VIT has resolved a prosecution concerning unregistered teaching, reinforcing the importance of registration in protecting children and maintaining trust in the teaching profession. The matter was finalised at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court, where the Court granted the individual a Diversion.

What the Court considered

It was alleged that during Terms 1 and 2 of 2025, the individual engaged in teaching activities at an independent school while not registered with VIT, as required under Victorian legislation. The individual had previously held Permission to Teach (PTT).

After completing her studies and when the temporary PTT expired, she did not apply for provisional registration.

By agreeing to Diversion, the individual has admitted the conduct and taken responsibility for it. A Diversion means the individual is not considered to have been found guilty of the offence.

Why registration matters

VIT Chief Executive Officer Martin Fletcher said the community expects everyone teaching in Victorian classrooms to be properly qualified and registered.

“Registration helps keep children and young people safe and supports trust in the teaching profession. Upholding that standard is a core part of our role.”

“VIT takes its responsibility to regulate the profession seriously. We monitor compliance and take action where needed to protect the integrity of teacher registration in Victoria.”

Our ongoing role

VIT will continue to take appropriate compliance and enforcement action where necessary to:

  • uphold professional standards
  • support public confidence in the teaching profession; and
  • ensure registration requirements are understood and met.

Consistent with legal requirements, VIT will not identify the individual involved.
