Who we are > What we do > How we regulate > Our strategy

The Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) regulates the teaching profession in Victoria. Our work ensures that teachers meet the consistent standards of quality, safety and professionalism throughout their careers.

We make decisions about who can enter and remain in the profession, set the standards teachers are expected to meet, and take action when those standards are not upheld. Our role is focused on protecting public interest and maintaining confidence in the profession.

Our core responsibilities include

  • accrediting initial teacher education programs
  • registering teachers to work in Victoria
  • setting and maintaining professional standards for teachers
  • monitoring ongoing professional competence and practice
  • investigating concerns about teacher conduct, competence and suitability to teach
  • taking regulatory action where standards are not met.

Protecting children and young people

Our responsibilities are designed to ensure that every learner in Victoria is taught by a qualified, safe and capable teacher.

By setting clear standards for entry to the profession and ongoing practice, we help maintain the quality of teaching across all career stages. Our regulatory oversight ensures that concerns about teachers are addressed fairly and transparently, with child safety and wellbeing at the centre of our decision-making.

Through this work, we support public trust and confidence in the teaching profession.

Our legislation

We operate under the Education and Training Reform Act 2006, which sets out our functions and powers as the regulator of the teaching profession in Victoria. The Act has been strengthened over time to clarify our role, expand our responsibilities, and reinforce our focus on child safety and the quality of teaching.
